Target Information

CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (molecular weight 111–115 kDa) expressed on many stem cell populations. It serves as a stem cell marker and may function as a surface receptor involved in receptor-mediated endocytosis, adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells and progenitors.

CD34 expression represents a specific state of hematopoietic development with distinct adhesion and differentiation properties. It may act as an adhesion molecule facilitating stem cell attachment to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells and as a scaffold for glycan attachment, enabling binding to lectins on stromal or marrow components. CD34 also plays a role in presenting carbohydrate ligands to selectins.

The intracellular domain of CD34 can be phosphorylated by activated protein kinase C, suggesting a role in signal transduction.
Diseases associated with CD34 dysfunction include dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
