Target Information
Human growth hormone (hGH) is a member of the somatotropin/prolactin family of hormones, which play a crucial role in growth regulation. The GH1 gene, along with four related genes, is located on chromosome 17 and exhibits high sequence identity among them. Alternative splicing produces five isoforms (19–24 kDa).
hGH is secreted by somatotroph cells in the pituitary gland and acts via cytokine receptor subfamily membrane receptors. It promotes body growth mainly by stimulating the liver and other tissues to secrete IGF-1, enhances myoblast differentiation and proliferation, and increases amino acid uptake and protein synthesis.
Mutations or deletions in the GH1 gene can lead to growth hormone deficiency and short stature.
