Target Information

AXL is a chronic myelogenous leukemia-associated oncogene also linked to colon cancer and melanoma. The AXL protein functions as a receptor tyrosine kinase, transmitting signals from the extracellular matrix by binding growth factors such as vitamin K-dependent protein GAS6, and is involved in the stimulation of cell proliferation.
TAM receptors, including AXL, play roles in phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Mice lacking all three TAM receptors exhibit degenerative phenotypes and develop autoimmune conditions similar to systemic lupus erythematosus.
AXL may act as an entry receptor for filoviruses and is used to identify Siglec 6+/Axl+ dendritic cells in human blood. Cellular Axl expression can be upregulated by TLR ligands (e.g., LPS, poly I:C). Soluble Axl, generated by proteolytic cleavage, may indicate inflammation or cancer when plasma levels are increased.
