Target Information

The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also found in bone marrow and the immune system. These arise from the long MBP gene (also called Golli-MBP) which includes three additional upstream exons.
Alternative splicing produces two families of transcripts:

  1. Golli-MBP transcripts — contain unique Golli exons fused to MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli and MBP sequences.
  2. Classic MBP transcripts — include only MBP exons, producing well-characterized myelin basic proteins.

This conserved gene structure suggests MBP is an integral part of the Golli transcription unit, important for regulation and function.
