Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also found in bone marrow and the immune system. These transcripts arise from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP), which includes additional upstream exons. Alternative splicing results in two sets of MBP-related transcripts and proteins:
- Golli-MBP – hybrid proteins containing N-terminal Golli sequence linked to MBP sequence.
- Classic MBP – proteins composed solely of MBP exons, forming the well-characterized myelin basic proteins.
This conserved gene structure suggests functional and regulatory importance in the nervous and immune systems.
