Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also found in bone marrow and immune system, arising from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP) that includes three additional upstream exons.
Alternative splicing from Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and proteins. Golli mRNAs contain unique exons spliced in-frame to MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli and MBP sequences.
The second transcript family includes only MBP exons, producing the classic myelin basic proteins. This conserved gene structure suggests MBP is part of the Golli transcription unit, which is important for regulation and function.
