Target Information
Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) proteins are abundant, pore-forming proteins belonging to the eukaryotic mitochondrial porins. They are found in the mitochondrial outer membrane and also expressed in the plasma membrane. At least three different VDAC genes have been identified in vertebrates. VDAC proteins play an essential role in cellular metabolism and in the early stages of apoptosis. VDAC constitutes a major pathway for metabolite exchange (ADP/ATP, succinate, citrate) between cytosol and mitochondria. VDAC1 in the plasma membrane is involved in apoptosis regulation via its redox activity.
