Target Information
TET1 is a dioxygenase that specifically binds methylcytosine (5mC), a minor base in mammalian DNA crucial for retrotransposon silencing and development. It catalyzes the conversion of 5mC to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (hmC). Although the function of hmC is not fully understood, it may influence chromatin structure, recruit specific factors, or act as an intermediate in cytosine demethylation. hmC is enriched in ES cells and brain tissue, particularly in Purkinje neurons, and may play a role in fetal development of heart, lung, and brain.
