Target Information

TET1 is a dioxygenase that specifically binds methylcytosine (5mC), a minor base in mammalian DNA found in repetitive DNA elements crucial for retrotransposon silencing and mammalian development. It catalyzes the conversion of 5mC to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (hmC). Although the clear function of hmC is still unclear, it may influence chromatin structure, recruit specific factors, or serve as an intermediate in cytosine demethylation. hmC is present in embryonic stem cells and enriched in the brain, particularly in Purkinje neurons. TET1 may play a role in fetal development of heart, lung, and brain.
