Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as an inactive 31 kDa precursor that requires cleavage by caspase-1 following inflammasome activation to produce the active 17 kDa form. IL-1β plays a critical role in innate immune responses by inducing other proinflammatory cytokines and initiating acute-phase reactions to infection and injury. Its activity is regulated by the IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA), which inhibits receptor binding. Elevated IL-1β levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases, and IL-1β neutralizing antibodies have potential therapeutic applications.
