Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing tissues (such as skin) and non-keratinizing cells (such as mesothelial cells). Although not typical endothelial markers, cytokeratins can also be found in some microvascular endothelial cells. At least 20 different cytokeratins (40–70 kDa, pI 5–8.5) can be identified by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Cytokeratins are biochemically classified into two groups: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides). Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from each class.
Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins are valuable tools for tumor identification and classification.
