Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing tissues (such as skin) and non-keratinizing cells (such as mesothelial cells). Although not typical endothelial markers, cytokeratins have been detected in some microvascular endothelial cells.
There are at least 20 cytokeratin types, with molecular weights ranging from 40–70 kDa and isoelectric points between 5–8.5, identifiable via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Cytokeratins are biochemically divided into two classes: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides). All epithelial cells express at least one member from each class.
Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins serve as valuable tools for tumor identification and classification.
