Target Information

Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typically endothelial markers, cytokeratins can be present in some microvascular endothelial cells.

There are at least 20 different cytokeratins (CKs) with molecular weights ranging from 40–70 kDa and isoelectric points between 5–8.5, identifiable via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. CKs are classified into two main types:

• Type I: Acidic polypeptides
• Type II: Basic polypeptides

All epithelial cells express at least one member of each class. Monoclonal antibodies targeting cytokeratin proteins serve as valuable markers for tumor identification and classification.
