Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typically endothelial markers, some microvascular endothelial cells also express cytokeratins.
At least 20 different cytokeratins (40–70 kDa, pI 5–8.5) can be identified via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Cytokeratins are categorized into two main classes:
- Type I (acidic polypeptides)
- Type II (basic polypeptides)
All epithelial cells express at least one member from each class.
Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins serve as useful markers for tumor identification and classification.
