Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissue (such as skin) and non-keratinizing cells (such as mesothelial cells). Although not a typical endothelial marker, cytokeratins have been detected in some microvascular endothelial cells. At least 20 different cytokeratins (CK) can be identified, ranging from 40–70 kDa with isoelectric points between 5–8.5, using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Biochemically, the CK family is divided into two classes:
- Type I: Acidic polypeptides
- Type II: Basic polypeptides
Every epithelial cell expresses at least one member from each class. Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins serve as valuable markers for tumor identification and classification.
