Target Information

This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the final zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer consisting of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic activity, while the B subunits act as carrier molecules. Platelet factor XIII contains only two A subunits identical to those in plasma. Upon activation by thrombin and calcium ions, the plasma factor XIII dissociates its B subunits, forming the active enzyme factor XIIIa, which functions as a transglutaminase to stabilize fibrin clots by crosslinking fibrin molecules and other proteins such as α2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin.
Deficiency in factor XIII can lead to bleeding disorders, impaired wound healing, and recurrent miscarriage.
