Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family, crucial for T cell signal transduction, differentiation, and activation.
CD8 is expressed mainly on T cells as a CD8α/CD8β heterodimer, functioning as a co-receptor with TCR for MHC-I molecules.
It is also found on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells as CD8α homodimers.
Binding of MHC-I/peptide complexes triggers Lck kinase recruitment, leading to lymphokine production and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation.
Activated CTLs play a key role in pathogen and tumor cell clearance. Differentiation of naive CD8⁺ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
