Target Information
NANOG (Nanog homeobox) is a homeodomain protein that regulates pluripotency and differentiation in embryonic stem cells. NANOG mRNA is expressed in pluripotent mouse and human cell lines but absent in differentiated cells.

- Human NANOG shares 52% overall amino acid identity with mouse NANOG and 85% identity in the homeodomain
- Human NANOG gene locus: 12p13.31; mouse NANOG locus: 6 F2
- Expressed in the inner cell mass of the blastocyst
- Involved in stem cell proliferation and self-renewal
- Overexpression promotes S phase entry and proliferation
NANOG is implicated in embryonic development and may aid in creating stem cells for regenerative therapies. It is also associated with diseases such as tetracarcinoma and germ cell/embryonal cancer.
