Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the MHC class I complex. It is expressed on many cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but not on erythrocytes.
B2M is also present in free form in plasma and shares homology with immunoglobulin constant regions, featuring a beta-pleated sheet structure. It is involved in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and CD8+ cell signaling.
Encoded by the B2M gene on chromosome 15, mutations in this gene can cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. Beta-2-microglobulin levels are used to assess renal function in kidney transplant recipients and serve as a prognostic marker for HIV infection.
