This antibody recognizes an extracellular epitope involving residues 534–546 in cysteine-rich repeat 3 of the CD18 antigen (integrin beta2 subunit; beta2 integrin). CD18 is a 90–95 kDa type I transmembrane protein expressed on all leukocytes.
It will not cross-react with canine.
Target Information
CD18 integrin beta 2 subunit is a 90 kDa type I transmembrane protein expressed on all leucocytes. CD18 combines with integrin molecules CD11a–c to form heterodimers at the cell surface, participating in cell adhesion and signaling.
CD18 forms heterodimers with four types of CD11 molecules to constitute leukocyte (beta2) integrins:
- αLβ2 (CD11a/CD18, LFA-1)
- αMβ2 (CD11b/CD18, Mac-1, CR3)
- αXβ2 (CD11c/CD18)
- αDβ2 (CD11d/CD18)
These integrins are essential for leukocyte migration and intercellular contact. Absence of CD18 leads to leukocyte adhesion deficiency type I (LAD1). Defects in the CD18 gene can cause LAD1 or psoriasiform skin disease. CD18 is also a target of Mannheimia haemolytica leukotoxin.
