Target Information
Synaptotagmin 1 is a synaptic vesicle membrane glycoprotein widely expressed throughout the CNS. It acts as a Ca²⁺ sensor in the regulation of exocytosis and neurotransmitter release.
Studies indicate that Ca²⁺-mediated binding of Synaptotagmin 1 to SNAP25 is essential for triggering membrane fusion. Specific residues within the C2B domain influence endocytic rate and vesicle size.
Synaptotagmin 1 binds acidic phospholipids requiring both an acidic head group and diacyl backbone. It interacts with receptors for activated protein kinase C in a Ca²⁺-dependent manner and binds neurexins, syntaxin, and AP2 in a Ca²⁺-independent manner.
Dysfunction of Synaptotagmin 1 is associated with food-borne and infant botulism.
