Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing tissues (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 CKs are known, categorized into type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and serves as a marker distinguishing stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is valuable for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
All epithelial cells express at least one acidic and one basic CK family member.
