Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family and the TGF-beta superfamily. These proteins contain a polybasic proteolytic processing site, producing a mature protein with seven conserved cysteine residues. Members of this family regulate cell growth and differentiation in embryonic and adult tissues. Studies in rodents indicate roles in the adult liver and differentiation of cholinergic central nervous system neurons.
