Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of highly conserved proteins involved in cell motility, structure, and integrity. Alpha actin is a major component of the contractile apparatus, while beta and gamma actins regulate cell motility. Smooth muscle actin is an alpha actin found in skeletal muscle and smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells. It plays a role in muscle contraction, cytoskeletal organization, and cell motility. Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene are associated with aortic aneurysm familial thoracic type 6. Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and appears in stress fibers of fibroblastic cells during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been identified.
