CD204 gene encodes the class A macrophage scavenger receptors, which include three different types (1, 2, 3) generated by alternative splicing.
These receptors are macrophage-specific trimeric integral membrane glycoproteins involved in various physiological and pathological processes such as atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and host defense.
- Isoforms type 1 and 2: Functional receptors mediating endocytosis of modified LDLs.
- Isoform type 3: Trapped in the endoplasmic reticulum, unable to internalize LDL, and can inhibit types 1 and 2 (dominant negative effect).
- Diseases associated with MSR1 include Barrett Esophagus and Prostate Cancer.
