Target Information
The CD204 gene encodes the class A macrophage scavenger receptors, which include three isoforms (types 1, 2, and 3) generated by alternative splicing. These macrophage-specific trimeric membrane glycoproteins are involved in physiological and pathological processes such as atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and host defense.
Types 1 and 2 mediate endocytosis of modified LDLs, while type 3 lacks this function due to altered intracellular processing and retention in the endoplasmic reticulum. Type 3 can inhibit type 1 and 2 function, suggesting a regulatory mechanism for scavenger receptor activity in macrophages.
Diseases associated with MSR1 include Barrett’s Esophagus and Prostate Cancer.
