Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is associated with HLA Class I antigens and expressed on various cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes. It is also found freely in plasma.
The amino acid sequence of B2M is homologous to immunoglobulin constant regions, forming a beta-pleated sheet structure. B2M participates in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and downstream signaling in naive CD8+ cells. The B2M gene is located on chromosome 15, and mutations may cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. B2M levels are used clinically to assess renal function and as a prognostic marker for HIV infection.
