Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the MHC class I complex. It is expressed on various cell types including lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells but not on erythrocytes. B2M is also found freely in plasma and shares structural homology with immunoglobulin constant regions. It plays roles in antigen presentation and TCR signaling, particularly in naïve CD8+ cells. The B2M gene is located on chromosome 15, and mutations may lead to hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. B2M levels are useful for assessing renal function and as a prognostic marker in HIV infection.
