Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial) tissues. At least 20 CKs are identified and classified into two groups:
- Type I (acidic polypeptides)
- Type II (basic polypeptides)
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and pairs with keratin 5. It distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and serves as a marker for squamous cell carcinomas. It is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
At least one acidic and one basic cytokeratin are expressed in all epithelial cells.
