Target Information

CD206 (MSR, Mannose receptor, MRC1) is a 175 kDa transmembrane protein belonging to the group of pattern recognition receptors.
It is predominantly expressed in tissue macrophages, dendritic cells, a subpopulation of endothelial cells, and sperm cells. CD206 plays an important role in innate and adaptive immune responses.
Also expressed on microglia and mato cells of the brain, but not on astrocytes or neurons.

CD206 mediates the recognition and uptake of various macromolecules, including modified lipoproteins, advanced glycation end products (AGEs), and amyloid β-protein (Aβ).
While its normal role involves cell adhesion and host defense, CD206 has also been implicated in atherosclerosis and amyloid β deposition in Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

The CD206 gene encodes class A macrophage scavenger receptors, which include three isoforms (1, 2, 3) generated by alternative splicing.

• Isoforms 1 and 2: functional receptors mediating endocytosis of modified LDLs.
• Isoform 3: does not internalize modified LDL and remains trapped within the endoplasmic reticulum, exerting a dominant negative effect on isoforms 1 and 2.

CD206 dysfunction has been associated with diseases such as leprosy and Gaucher’s disease.
