Target Information
Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) is a membrane-bound glycoprotein enzyme essential for thyroid gland function. It catalyzes iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and forms phenoxy-ester bonds between iodinated tyrosines, leading to synthesis of thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine).
Mutations in TPO can cause congenital hypothyroidism, congenital goiter, and thyroid hormone organification defects.
Several transcript variants exist, though not all are fully characterized.
Diseases associated with TPO include Thyroid Dyshormonogenesis 2A and Congenital Hypothyroidism.
