Target Information
Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) encodes a membrane-bound glycoprotein enzyme essential for thyroid gland function. It catalyzes iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and formation of phenoxy-ester bonds, producing thyroid hormones such as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
Mutations in TPO are linked to disorders like congenital hypothyroidism, congenital goiter, and thyroid hormone organification defect IIA. Multiple transcript variants exist, though some full-length forms remain undetermined.
Diseases associated with TPO include Thyroid Dyshormonogenesis 2A and Congenital Hypothyroidism.
