Target Information
Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) is a membrane-bound glycoprotein enzyme essential for thyroid gland function. It catalyzes iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and the formation of phenoxy-ester bonds between iodinated tyrosines, leading to the synthesis of thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine).
Mutations in the TPO gene can result in thyroid-related disorders such as congenital hypothyroidism, congenital goiter, and thyroid hormone organification defect IIA. Several transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified, though some remain incompletely characterized.
Diseases associated with TPO include Thyroid Dyshormonogenesis 2A and Congenital Hypothyroidism.
