Target Information
Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) is a membrane-bound glycoprotein enzyme essential for thyroid gland function. It catalyzes iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and the coupling of iodotyrosines to produce thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
Mutations in the TPO gene can lead to thyroid-related disorders such as congenital hypothyroidism, congenital goiter, and thyroid hormone organification defect IIA. Several transcript variants exist, though some remain incompletely characterized.
Diseases associated with TPO include Thyroid Dyshormonogenesis 2A and Congenital Hypothyroidism.
