Target Information
ASCL1 (also known as ASH1) is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor essential for early nervous system development. It is expressed in fetal brain and plays a critical role in the formation and survival of autonomic neurons. ASCL1 interacts with MEF-2A to regulate gene expression important for neuronal circuit formation. High ASCL1 expression in neuroendocrine tumors—such as medullary thyroid cancer, small cell lung cancer, and lung cancers with neuroendocrine features—makes it a useful marker for these cancer types. The ASCL1 gene maps to human chromosome 12 and contains a trinucleotide repeat region, suggesting potential involvement in inherited disease.
