Target Information
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It acts on ligand-gated receptor channels such as NMDA, AMPA, and kainate receptors involved in fast excitatory synaptic transmission. Glutamate also regulates enzymes producing second messengers via G-protein–coupled metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs).
Group I receptors (including mGluR1a and mGluR5) stimulate phospholipase C, increasing phosphoinositide turnover and calcium release from internal stores.
Group II and III receptors (including mGluR2, mGluR3) inhibit adenylyl cyclase activity.
