eIF4E는 번역 효율 증가, 스플라이싱, mRNA 안정성 및 RNA 핵 내 수출 등 다양한 세포 과정에 관여합니다. 모든 진핵세포 mRNA는 5' 말단에 7-methylguanosine 캡 구조(m7GpppX)를 가지고 있으며, eIF4E는 리보솜이 이 캡 구조를 인식하도록 돕는 번역 개시 인자입니다.
이 단백질은 단독 형태와 EIF4F 복합체의 구성 요소로 존재하며, EIF4E는 진핵 번역 장치의 속도 제한 요소로 작용합니다. EIF4F 복합체의 다른 구성 요소는 ATPase 및 RNA helicase 활성을 가진 EIF4A(50 kDa)와 EIF4G(220 kDa)입니다.
