Target Information
Caveolae are specialized domains of the plasma membrane that are implicated in the sequestration of various lipid and protein molecules. These organelles play key roles in lipid metabolism, growth regulation, signal transduction, and apoptosis. Caveolin interacts with and regulates heterotrimeric G-proteins. There are three known members of the caveolin multigene family, encoding 21–24 kDa integral membrane proteins that make up the major structural component of the caveolar membrane. Caveolin-2 is abundantly expressed in fibroblasts, differentiated adipocytes, smooth and skeletal muscle, and endothelial cells. Caveolin-1 shows similar expression, while Caveolin-3 is mainly expressed in muscle tissues.
