Target Information
PCNA (polymerase delta auxiliary protein) is essential for DNA replication and is involved in DNA excision and mismatch repair pathways. It binds to CDK inhibitor p21, endonucleases Fen1 and XPG, and DNA cytosine 5-methyltransferase (MCMT).
PCNA serves as a marker for proliferating cells, especially in early G1 and S phases, and is useful for assessing tumor proliferation status.
It functions as a cofactor for DNA polymerase delta, forming a homotrimer that enhances leading strand synthesis during replication.
Upon DNA damage, PCNA is ubiquitinated and participates in RAD6-dependent DNA repair.
Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified, and pseudogenes exist on chromosome 4 and the X chromosome.
