Target Information
Mutant alleles at the BCHE locus are responsible for suxamethonium sensitivity. Homozygous individuals may experience prolonged apnea after administration of the muscle relaxant suxamethonium during surgical anesthesia. These individuals exhibit low pseudocholinesterase activity and atypical substrate behavior. In the absence of the relaxant, the homozygote shows no known disadvantage.
