Target Information
BCL-XL is a member of the BCL-2 protein family. These proteins form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in various cellular activities.
BCL-XL is located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulates the opening of the mitochondrial membrane channel (VDAC).
VDAC controls mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release—key factors in apoptosis.
Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encode distinct isoforms: the longer isoform acts as an apoptotic inhibitor, while the shorter form acts as an apoptotic activator.
