Target Information
Ran is a small signaling GTPase involved in nucleocytoplasmic transport. It also functions in spindle aster formation and nuclear envelope reassembly during mitosis. Unlike Ras or Rho, Ran is not membrane-associated. The localization of RanGAP (Ran GTPase-activating protein) and RCC1 (nucleotide exchange factor) defines the local concentration of RanGTP vs. RanGDP, which is crucial for signaling. Mammalian RanGAP binds to the nuclear pore via SUMOylation at its C-terminus and interaction with nucleoporin Nup358.
