IL-6 유전자는 염증 및 B 세포 성숙에 관여하는 사이토카인을 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 자가면역 질환이나 감염 시 발열을 유도하는 내인성 발열물질로 작용하며, 급성 및 만성 염증 부위에서 주로 발현됩니다. IL-6 수용체를 통해 염증성 전사 반응을 유도하며, 당뇨병 및 전신성 소아 류마티즘 관절염과 같은 염증 관련 질환과 연관되어 있습니다. 또한 COVID-19를 포함한 바이러스 감염에서 IL-6 단백질의 상승이 보고되었습니다. 관련 질환에는 Kaposi Sarcoma 및 Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis가 포함됩니다.
