Product Specific Information

  • Immunohistochemistry (PFA fixed): Incubate antibody for 30 min at room temperature.
  • For formalin-fixed tissues, heat sections in 10 mM Tris with 1 mM EDTA (pH 9.0) for 45 min at 95°C, then cool at RT for 20 min.

Target Information

This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the last zymogen to become activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of 2 A subunits and 2 B subunits.
The A subunits have catalytic function, whereas the B subunits serve as plasma carrier molecules. Platelet factor XIII consists only of 2 A subunits, identical to those of plasma origin. Upon cleavage of the activation peptide by thrombin and in the presence of calcium ions, the plasma factor XIII dissociates its B subunits and yields the active enzyme factor XIIIa.
Factor XIIIa acts as a transglutaminase to catalyze gamma-glutamyl-epsilon-lysine crosslinking between fibrin molecules, stabilizing the fibrin clot. It also crosslinks alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin to the alpha chains of fibrin.
Factor XIII deficiency is classified into two categories:

  • Type I deficiency: lack of both A and B subunits
  • Type II deficiency: lack of A subunit alone

These defects can cause lifelong bleeding tendency, defective wound healing, and habitual abortion.
