Target Information
The Myogenic determination gene (MyoD) was first identified by its ability to convert embryonic mouse fibroblast cells into muscle cells. Forced expression of the MyoD (human homolog: myf3) gene in various cell types can induce muscle cell characteristics or activate muscle-specific genes.
The regulatory domain of MyoD includes a 70-amino-acid region containing a basic DNA-binding motif and a helix-loop-helix (HLH) dimerization motif.
Related genes sharing homology with MyoD include myf5, myogenin (myf4), and myf6 (MRF4/herculin).
