Target Information

Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class constitutes the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens and maintains lens transparency and refractive index. Lens fiber cells lose nuclei during development, retaining crystallins throughout life, making them extremely stable.
Mammalian crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma form a superfamily. Alpha and beta families are further divided into acidic and basic groups.
Beta-crystallins differ by the presence of a C-terminal extension (present in basic group). They form aggregates and heterodimers with other beta-crystallins.
The CRYBB1 gene, a beta basic group member, undergoes cleavage at its N-terminal extension during lens maturation and is part of a gene cluster with beta-A4, beta-B2, and beta-B3.
