Target Information

Crystallins are divided into two major classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class forms the major structural proteins of the vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. Lens fiber cells lose nuclei during development, resulting in long-term stability of crystallin proteins.
Mammalian lens crystallins include alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma form a superfamily. Beta-crystallins are heterogeneous, forming homodimers and heterodimers, and differ by the presence of C-terminal extensions.
CRYBA2 belongs to the beta acidic group, and three alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding identical proteins have been reported.
