Target Information
Spectrin (Sp), the most abundant erythrocyte membrane skeleton protein, maintains the biconcave shape of red blood cells while providing flexibility and elasticity.
Erythrocyte spectrin is a heterodimer of a 280 kDa alpha subunit and a 246 kDa beta subunit, forming a 100 nm rod-like structure.
Spectrins in other tissues may consist of homologous alpha and beta subunits (fodrin).
A nomenclature designates erythrocyte spectrins as alpha-1 and beta-1, and fodrin subunits as alpha-2 and beta-2. Alternatively spliced forms are designated epsilon-1, epsilon-2, etc. (e.g., beta-1 epsilon-1).
