Target Information
The BMP4 gene encodes a protein belonging to the bone morphogenetic protein family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily. Members of this family are involved in growth and differentiation processes. BMP4 plays a key role in endochondral bone formation, and reduced expression has been linked to bone disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region results in three variants encoding the same protein.
