Target Information
IFN gamma (Interferon gamma, Type II interferon) is a macrophage activation factor produced primarily by T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells in response to antigens and cytokines.
It is a dimeric glycoprotein (~45 kDa) composed of two 146 amino acid subunits, functioning as a homodimer.
On SDS-PAGE, IFN gamma shows 25, 20, and minor 15.5 kDa bands due to differential glycosylation.
Human IFN gamma does not cross-react with mouse.
Functions include:
- Antiviral and tumor antiproliferative activity
- Induction of class I and II MHC
- Macrophage activation
- Enhanced immunoglobulin secretion by B lymphocytes
IFN gamma acts via the JAK-STAT pathway through receptors I and II.
It shares ~40% sequence homology between human and mouse forms.
Upregulated by IL2, FGF basic, and EGF; downregulated by vitamin D3 or DMN.
Mutations in the IFN gamma gene are associated with aplastic anemia.
